I have been gardening for over thirty years.I first began in my own wee patch of garden in rural Aberdeenshire at the age of seven and have never stopped since.I now live in Dunbar and have a slightly bigger patch to play with but the north easterlies are a bit of a challenge for certain plants.
I have done some training at the Royal Botanics in Edinburgh and with the Scottish wildlife Trust but most of my experience has come from working with other people including a design company in North London and a tree Surgery company in Aberdeenshire.I have had my own gardening business for over twenty years now and most of my work is,apart from a 17th century castle in Kintyre, around the Edinburgh and East Lothian area.
I tend not to take on big landscaping jobs involving large areas of paving and i do cut the occasional lawn but these tasks i leave to the hard landscapers and the maintenance gardeners.I really look forward to jobs that include - garden design and renovation - planting- pruning - advice on what to plant where - developing wildlife gardens including ponds- and most of all, turning part (or the whole!) garden into fruit and vegetable production.I love the various forms of fruit tree training and even with small gardens, a few cordons or stopovers can produce surprisingly good results.I also like to encourage wildlife into gardens by creating wildflower areas,ponds,installing nest boxes and planting plants that are attractive to insects for as much of the year as possible,even in the dead of winter its a good idea not to chop a herbaceous border back !
I recently built a larch clad shed with a sedum roof (see gallery) in my own garden and this is something i would love to do more of,very satisfying and I've also built a rustic garden table or two and finally - compost heaps! I do love a compost heap and i take pride in building them,albeit slightly over engineered, and encourage every client to incorporate one,or three in there garden.
Most of all i enjoy working with people who are also keen and enthusiastic gardeners.
